VIRGIN ISLANDS

Least Grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus)
Adult with two chicks at Concordia, St. John, 15 January 2002. Photos © by Rick Falkenberg. First breeding record for St. John and first record since late 1930s/early 1940s. The birds were first found at the pond on 6 December 2001 and produced four broods from January to June 2002.
Pair at Fortuna Bay, St. Thomas, 27 January 2003 (A), a solitary individual at Turpentine Run, St. Thomas, 26 January 2003 (B), and a nest with at least four partially buried eggs at Red Hook, St. Thomas, 6 February 2003. Photos © by Floyd Hayes (A and C) and Brett Hayes (B). This species was basically unrecorded in the Virgin Islands for several decades but its numbers have apparently increased within the past decade, with breeding confirmed on all three major islands in the past few years. In 2003 up to 10 were seen in a day in St. Thomas, and breeding was confirmed at four sites.
