Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla)

Immature with orange colouration at base of the bill, at South Oropouche Swamp, Trinidad, 24 September 2000. Photo © by Floyd Hayes. A small proportion of migrant shorebirds of several species in Trinidad possess such adventitious colouration on the face, apparently acquired from the substrate while foraging (see, for example, the orange face of a Hudsonian Godwit in Trinidad).
