Female
at the Caroni Rice Fields, Trinidad, 11 June 2001. Photos © by Floyd
Hayes. First for T&T. Found by Martyn Kenefick, this bird was present
9-13 June 2001. Note the unmarked grey bill, plain head lacking a
superciliary, and long tail, distinguishing it from other potential duck
species. The rufous breast colouration can be attributed to
adventitious staining while foraging in a forward-leaning posture. Note
the distinctly smaller size than that of Fulvous Whistling-Ducks (Dendrocygna bicolor) in flight photo at bottom right.
